#Virtual Pride 2020: A guide to concerts, dance parties, drag shows and more

Gay pride will spread by way of a virtual rainbow this weekend.

With the coronavirus pandemic sidelining many in-person LGBTQ celebrations this year, NYC Pride will host a two-hour broadcast extravaganza, featuring “Pose” star Billy Porter, singer Janelle Monáe and more — in lieu of a parade —starting at noon Sunday on several ABC network platforms.

But it’s not the only digital space where you’ll be able to wave your rainbow flag and revel in the past, present and future of the LGBTQ+ movement. Here is a glittery gathering of other virtual options, plus a couple of suggestions for getting out and proud — with takeout — in the real world.

Global Pride 2020

This big, gay 24-hour livestream — featuring artists, entertainers, activists and politicians — was curated with help from hundreds of LGBTQ+ organizations from more than 80 countries. The overwhelming lineup will include appearances by presidential candidate Joe Biden, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Laverne Cox, Todrick Hall, The (née Dixie) Chicks, Olivia Newton-John, Adam Lambert, Kesha, the Village People, Pussy Riot, Deborah Cox, LeAnn Rimes, Thelma Houston, Big Freedia, Natasha Bedingfield and more. Kicks off at 1 a.m. Saturday; free, but donations accepted for Pride Relief Fund to benefit LGBTQ organizations affected by COVID-19. Amazon Pride Inside

Amazon Prime will host a two-day virtual festival — an “innovative, 360[-degree] environment” featuring Lady Bunny, Betty Who, Greyson Chance, Vincint and 16 queens from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Performances, singalongs, makeup tips and plenty of spilled tea can be experienced via “peer-to-peer video” between up to nine friends. Saturday and Sunday; free. But everyone needs to eat IRL

Need some sustenance — and maybe a little fresh air — in between squinting at virtual pride festivities on your laptop? Boxers sports bar in Hell’s Kitchen opened its roof deck this week for New York’s Phase 2 recovery. Brunch will be available both days with burgers ($16), steak and eggs ($17), “big ass pancakes” ($16) and more. Wash ’em down with a summer-ready frozen “Boxerita” margarita (watermelon, peach, strawberry or mango, $12) or a Bloody Mary, mimosa or bellini ($8). Customers must wear face masks when not seated at tables.

Traditionally shirtless servers will wear masks themselves but probably little else beyond the bar’s signature red boxer shorts. “This week they’ve been keeping their shirts on. Everyone’s transitioning from not having the gym, so people want to start off a little modest,” says bartender Zack Snyder, 32, laughing. “But for Pride, I think they’re going to be shirtless.” Boxers Hell’s Kitchen, 742 Ninth Ave., 212-951-1518; deck open noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; brunch noon to 4 p.m. both days. If a sweet treat is more your speed, Baked By Melissa is cooking up a yummy rainbow of Pride Cupcakes (starting at 25 for $30) and Pride & Shine Cupcakes (50 for $60) and donating 10% of net proceeds to NYC’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. The bite-size treats are available by delivery or pickup from select locations.
