#Virtual BET Awards will be a political affair this year

Not even a pandemic can stop the BET Awards.

The show will go on Sunday at 8 p.m. on BET and CBS with its first-ever virtual ceremony hosted by comedian Amanda Seales. And there are still plenty of A-list acts on the musical lineup, including Alicia Keys, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and Lil Wayne.

The event will also showcase performances by some of the hottest newcomers in the game, from DaBaby and Roddy Ricch to Megan Thee Stallion. The latter two artists both have five nominations this year — they’re each up for Video of the Year, Album of the Year and Viewers’ Choice Award.

Also up for Video of the Year is Drake, who leads all nominees with six nods. Meanwhile, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Lizzo and DaBaby each have four nominations.

There may not be a red carpet this year, but a who’s who of stars will still be upping the glamour quotient at the festivities, which include a pre-show at 7 p.m. on BET hosted by Terrence J. and Erica Ash.

Billy Porter, Naomi Campbell, Misty Copeland, Samuel L. Jackson, Viola Davis, Regina Hall, Michael B. Jordan and Lena Waithe are among the celebs who are scheduled to appear throughout the show.

The awards show this year will likely take on a more political note, given recent Black Lives Matter activism. Legendary rap group Public Enemy will perform their new anti-Trump tirade, “State of the Union (STFU),” and Congresswoman Maxine Waters is expected to be in attendance.
