“#Video shows avalanche tumbling towards Utah snowmobilers”
Five snowmobilers survived a massive avalanche in Utah on Saturday — with one of them recording the dramatic moments the wall of snow closes in.
The group had been riding in the Uinta Mountains when the avalanche hit, according to footage posted to Facebook by snowmobiler Miles Penrose.
“As I finished recording my brother playing in the pow, the mountain shook,” Penrose wrote.
“My original thought was… earthquake. Then it [hit] me, avalanche,” he said.
One of their friend’s, Nate, recorded the terrifying event.
“Avalanche!” a man in the video can be heard screaming as the snow barrels down the mountain.
“Oh s–t that’s coming to us,” he says.
Nate can be seen pulling away on his sled in an attempt to get ahead of the avalanche before the camera goes dark.
Penrose said his safety gear — a type of airbag — did not properly deploy since it was not turned on.
Despite the snafu, he said he miraculously remained above the snow as he was swept about 20 yards away.
He later found his brother, who was partially buried in the snow, but otherwise unharmed.
The three other snowmobilers also survived the scary ordeal, Penrose said.
