#Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Becomes Top-Grossing Rebuild of Evangelion Film

Mantan Web (via Anime News Network) reported that Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time has become the highest-grossing entry in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, with the film seeing a gross of 7.42 billion yen (~$67.8 million) and ticket sales of 4.84 million as of April 12.

This marks the latest of the film’s achievements, with Evangelion 3.0+1.0 previously beating the total 5.3 billion yen (~$48 million) domestic gross of 2012’s Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo by earning 6 billion yen (~$54.8 million) within 21 days of its release. Variety reported that the film earned $30.6 million in its first week alone. Evangelion 3.0+1.0 also broke the record for biggest IMAX opening in Japan with takings of US $740,000.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 opened in 466 theatres on March 8 after several delays. It is the fourth and final entry in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, which is a retelling of 1995’s Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Its theme song, “One Last Kiss,” was performed by Utada Hikaru, who also performed the theme songs of the other Rebuild of Evangelion movies.

On March 30, the film’s production company Studio Khara released two new trailers that contained scenes that were not shown in earlier previews.
