#Veteran Animator Manabu Oohashi Passes Away at 73

Animator Manabu Oohashi, who began his anime career in the 60s, passed away on February 12 this year, his Twitter account has revealed. He was 73.

Oohashi, who also goes by the pen name Mao Lamdo, was born in 1949. He debuted as an in-between animator at the age of 15 on the 1964 Toei Animation production Shounen Ninja Kaze no Fujimaru. He later made his key animation debut on Rainbow Sentai Robin, which premiered in 1966. 

Oohashi retired from Toei in 1968. He went on to be involved in titles produced by companies like A Pro, Tatsunoko Pro, and Mushi Pro. During Madhouse‘s early years, Oohashi was involved in several anime which the studio provided production assistance for, including Gamba no Bouken, the Aim for the Ace! movie, Nobody’s Boy: Remi, Unico, and Unico in the Island of Magic. 

Some of the other anime that Oohashi worked on include Cyborg 009, Speed Racer, Ashita no Joe 2, Jungle Emperor Leo, and Metropolis. His more recent credits include the 2010 Makoto Shinkai film Children Who Chase Lost Voices, 2011’s Tamayura, 2012’s Patema Inverted, and the animated segment of the 2019 NHK drama Natsuzora‘s 130th episode.

Oohashi dabbled in directing with the “Cloud” segment of 1987’s ROBOT CARNIVAL. In 2015, he became a lecturer at Laputa Art Animation School.
