In Valheim, the ocean is more than just a barrier to exploration. It’s its biome, and while there’s less to discover here than in the game’s land-based areas, there are still a few unique encounters to be had. While sailing the seas, you might come across a Kraken — also known as a Leviathan or Giant Turtle.

How To Find The Kraken, Leviathan, Sea Turtle

You’ll need a small boat and a voyage out to sea to find the Kraken in Valheim. You’ve discovered the Kraken if you see a floating island in the middle of the ocean with trees, rocks, and abyssal barnacles. It only floats in the waves. Climb aboard the Kraken and harvest all of the Abyssal barnacles for chitin. With it, you’ll be able to make a wide range of items.

It is entirely possible to locate the Kraken without the aid of a boat or raft. All you have to do is keep an eye out for a small island floating randomly rather than along the water’s waves. Currently, the Kraken does nothing.

Mining for Chitin

The Kraken is not only island-sized and shaped, but it also has other land-like characteristics. This includes gathering resources, just as you would if they weren’t on the back of a very likely sentient creature. The game’s only source of chitin, a crafting resource, is the abyssal barnacles on a Kraken’s surface.

Valheim mining generally requires the use of a tool. In a pinch, your standard hammer will suffice, but a pickaxe is strongly advised. This is especially important when mining the Kraken because you only have so much time.

Mining doesn’t appear to harm Krakens, but that doesn’t mean you should attack them with a pickaxe. Although the island appears to be more of a shell within which the creature lives, having Vikings scrambling around on your back is bound to make you itchy at some point. When a Kraken notices you mining it, it will begin to move to shake you off.

The good news is that no matter how far the Kraken swims, you will not be thrown into the water without warning. The bad news is that if you’re not careful, you might end up far from your boat. Keep track of how far you’ve come and left with your chitin haul before things get out of hand.

Abyssal Weapons

There are only two craftable items that use chitin right now, but they’re both pretty cool looking, and one of them has a special use.

Abyssal Razor

  • Recipe:
    • 2x Leather Scraps
    • 4x Fine Wood
    • 20x Chitin

  • Knives aren’t the most powerful weapons in the game, but they can help you sneak up on your enemies.
  • When it comes to base damage, the abyssal razor is only second to the blackmetal knife, so stealthy players should pick one up.

Abyssal Harpoon

  • Recipe:
    • 3x Leather Scraps
    • 8x Fine Wood
    • 30x Chitin

  • This is the game’s only harpoon.
  • When used as an offensive weapon, the harpoon deals less immediate damage than the razor, but it has the unique ability to ensnare an enemy.
  • A successful harpoon hit causes it to latch on to a creature for some time, preventing them from fleeing out of your range. Because they’re pinned in place, it’s a lot easier to land follow-up attacks on them.
  • It may be of limited use to solo players, but co-op teams may benefit greatly from having a harpooner on their team.

The first time you mine for chitin, you’ll add these recipes to your repertoire. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to have a Level 4 workbench to make either of them.
