#US Postmaster General promises service ‘not slowing down’ mail voting

US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said all election-related mail will proceed without interference from him, denying claims he would use his position to meddle in the 2020 election.

“Despite any assertions to the contrary, we are not slowing down election mail or any other mail,” DeJoy said during a Friday meeting of the Postal Service Board of Governors, Fox News reported.

“We will do everything we can to deliver election mail in a timely manner consistent with our operational standards,” he said. “We do ask election officials and voters to be mindful of the time that it takes for us to deliver ballots, whether it is a blank ballot going to a voter or a completed ballot going back to election officials.”

DeJoy, a longtime Republican donor, was appointed as head of the Post Office by President Trump in May, and has faced questions after reports of mail delays amid a broader overhaul of the postal system. He insisted his personal relationship with the billionaire would not affect the performance of his job.

“While I certainly have a good relationship with the president of the United States, the notion that I would ever make decisions concerning the Postal Service at the direction of the president, or anyone else in the administration, is wholly off-base,” DeJoy said.

The 2020 election is expected to have large numbers of mail-in ballots as voters stay away from the polls over coronavirus fears. President Trump has railed against the idea, warning it could become a tool for Democrats to snatch the election from him and has even floated delaying the election over the issue.
