“#Urban Meyer says ‘no chance’ he joins USC amid Jaguars turmoil”
It seems like Urban Meyer’s short time in Jacksonville has abided by Murphy’s Law — everything that can go wrong, will.
First, the botched Tim Tebow experiment. Then, splitting reps between Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew in the offseason, only to predictably name Lawrence the starter and ship Minshew off to Philadelphia. And in their opening week, the Jaguars were pummeled by the Texans, a team many thought could go down in history as the worst NFL team of all-time.
The Jaguars play the Broncos this week, and in yet another surprising move, the team refused to make Meyer available to the Denver media — which Denver Post sports editor Scott Monserud called “bush (league).”
Amy Palcic, the Jaguars’ head of PR, took responsibility for not making Meyer available, saying it was “100% my call” and that a majority of teams do the same. In fact, the NFL recently changed the rule; in previous years, coaches were required to meet with media from opposing teams, while now it is optional.
But the timing is still suspicious. Meyer just lost the first NFL game and first season opener at any level of his career, and in somewhat embarrassing fashion. The defeat also came on the heels of a report from CBS Sports that said Meyer’s “temper and lack of familiarity with the ebbs and flows of the NFL calendar” has led to clashes with his players and staff.
“He has everyone looking over their shoulders already,” a source said in the report. “He becomes unhinged way too easily, and he doesn’t know how to handle losing, even in the preseason. He loses it and wants to take over the drills himself. It’s not good.”
An odd coincidence that he all of a sudden won’t meet with the media. An even odder coincidence that it came a day after the USC head coaching job opened up – when Clay Helton was fired.
It remains to be seen how the Jaguars will rebound this weekend when they face the Broncos in their home opener. The team is currently a six-point underdog in their own stadium.
