“#’Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,’ ‘Broad City’ & More Comedies to Brighten Your Mood”
Eric Liebowitz/Netflix; Walter Thompson/Comedy Central
When life gets tough, sometimes you need to put on some sweatpants, eat dessert, and spend some time with a cast that will cheer you up. Thankfully, that’s part of the mission of entertainment. It’s meant to distract you from all of the other craziness that life brings and put you in a whole different world for a moment.
If you’ve had a long day of work, you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or if nothing could just seem to go right today, you’re in luck. Below, we’ve gathered seven of the best shows that are guaranteed to brighten your mood. Even better, they’re all on streaming services.
See below for our picks, from Broad City to The Good Place.
Fox
That ’70s Show
If you’re in the mood for a more nostalgic, sitcom-style series, this one’s for you. The scenes, characters, and situations are definitely more cookie-cutter than the others you’ll find on this list, which definitely makes this show a “sit-back-and-relax” form of entertainment. It’s a classic storyline of following characters into adulthood, meaning the content will definitely be relatable. It’s definitely a feel-good series.

Comedy Central/Walter Thompson
Broad City
While this comedy certainly falls on the quirkier side, the electric energy it gives off is sure to perk you up. Follow Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) and Ilana (Ilana Glazer) as they navigate their lives as young adults in New York City (for which they are both clearly unequipped). These two will show you what it’s like to stop caring, do whatever you want, and live your best life.

HBO/Merie W. Wallace
Insecure
This series provides the perfect balance between valuable life lessons and great comedy. Issa Rae plays the levelheaded Issa Dee, who, along with her best friend, Molly (Yvonne Orji), faces the everyday struggles of a modern-day Black woman and young adult, and, of course, she wants to have a little bit of fun. This is the perfect series to try out if you need a healthy dose of inspiration with your comedy.
Available on HBO Max
NBC
Parks and Recreation
Arguably one of the most binge-worthy NBC comedies, this series will have you on the floor laughing when you least expect it. With a wide array of humor represented, all types of viewers will be satisfied. Amy Poehler perfectly portrays the overly-passionate and enthusiastic Leslie Knope, the Deputy Director of the Parks and Recreation Department in Pawnee, Indiana. The mediocrity of the town and her role set the stage for situations and one-liners that you’ll find yourself quoting to your friends later on.
Available on Netflix, Hulu and Peacock
Pop TV
Schitt’s Creek
Buckle your seatbelts for this one, because the Rose family is about to take you for a wild ride. When their high-class mansion is confiscated, forcing them to move to a tiny, extremely underwhelming town named Schitt’s Creek, their culture shock is hilariously extravagant. Eugene Levy teamed up with his son Dan Levy and brother Fred Levy (who served as a producer) to create this comedy favorite, and you’ll find yourself watching for hours on end to see what the family gets into next.
Available on Netflix and Hulu
NBC/Colleen Hayes
The Good Place
If you are in need of a bright and shiny comedy, this is certainly the one for you. When Eleanor (Kristen Bell) is accidentally sent to heaven instead of hell, she finds herself amongst incredible quality people who don’t quite match up with her cynical, sarcastic, and slightly rude personality. Watching Eleanor navigate a place that is (literally) all rainbows and ice cream when there is almost nothing she hates more is hilariously memorable.
Available on Netflix and Hulu
Netflix/Eric Liebowitz
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Who thought a cult comedy would ever exist? After Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) is rescued from the underground bunker where she was part of a cult for 15 years, she moves to New York City to start her new life. The only problem is that most of her formative years were spent in the bunker, so she lacks much of the knowledge and street smarts to do so. She makes plenty of hysterical mistakes and learns lessons that most people would have in middle school. Her enthusiasm for life and eagerness to explore is sure to give you secondhand excitement as you watch her discover what the world has to offer.
