#Twitter tightens warning label policy after Biden meme complaints

Twitter tweaked its policy to add warning labels on shared posts that include memes and doctored videos after the social media giant was hit with complaints that it didn’t do enough to stop Biden memes.

Twitter had placed labels on posts from House Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, White House social media director Dan Scavino and President Trump’s reelection campaign in recent days, Politico reported on Monday.

The social network on Monday labeled a Trump campaign tweet “manipulated media” because it cut off a Biden quote that altered its meaning.

The clip shows Biden saying “You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America,” a part of a line delivered in Joe Biden’s Pittsburgh speech on Monday.

But the full quote said: “Trump and Pence are running on this, and I find it fascinating: Quote, ‘You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America.’ And what’s their proof? The violence we’re seeing in Donald Trump’s America.”

Previously, the warning labels were not placed on posts users shared through “quote tweets,” or retweets with added comment from another user.

Twitter tightened up its policy on Monday to fix what Kayvon Beykpout, Twitter’s head of product, told Politico is a “gap in implementation” against altered media.

But, so far, the labels aren’t appearing on all Twitter platforms, notably the dashboard TweetDeck.

“We’re working at continuing to expand where these labels appear,” Twitter spokesperson Trenton Kennedy told the news website.

Biden called out Scalise’s video and said it should be removed from the site, linking to a posting from Ady Barkan, who appeared in the altered video and also demanded it be taken down because “these are not my words.”

Scalise later removed it.

Trump and Republicans have also criticized Twitter for reacting too hastily to label the president’s tweets as manipulated or removing them from the platform.
