SYNOPSIS:

The fictional Creepshow comic books come to life in this anthology series of terrifying tales hosted by the silent Creepshow ghoul.

REVIEW:

The Creepshow franchise has always been one that demanded repeat viewings of its classic campy anthology horror stories. The tales were inventive and yet diverse enough that they flowed from one tale into the next. 1982 marked the debut of the Stephen King and George Romero release that got a worthy theatrical run. 5 years later, we were granted a sequel which in the same fashion brought us a handful of pretty cool little stories additionally designed to entertain, frighten and amuse.

Which brings us up to the present day offering provided by the horror network and studio Shudder. Presented in 2019, Creepshow would get a reboot provided per way of a web television series designed to carry on in the tradition of the first 2films by introducing new tales of terror. The idea is that the stories were pages within a comic book of same name and narrated into small short horror stories.

Now the idea of an anthology horror series is certainly nothing new (with similar style presentations popping up every year under different packages). However, its the Creepshow moniker that appeals to classic horror fans who not only remember the ol days of anthology films and TV programs but welcome new tales of terror designed to carry on in the tradition of these.

Creepshow is exactly that, now being released on blu ray in year 2020. Certainly a welcome addition to horror fans who now have plenty of “at-home” time while awaiting the demise of a pandemic to pass. Suudder has recognized this need and acted upon it with a slew of new terror tales offerings.

The rebooted Creep show-turned-series starts off with a bang! Each episode contains 2 shorts that root themselves in the best aspects of horror (The kind we grew up on and content that we love!) Monsters, scary situations, fantastical occurrences and supernatural fiction are all here for your enjoyment. In fact, as a reviewer I began to loose faith in anthologies as I’ve had to endure so many bland horror movie releases (that attempt to tell 3 stories over 90 minutes while failing to fulfill the simple aspect of being entertaining).

Creepshow, is a series that understands this need by delivering great stories, acting talents and visuals. The monsters are also extremely well done (not surprising seeing that the series is helmed by executive producer Greg Nicotero). The stories are rich in intrigue and delivery rooted in compelling small journeys that ground themselves in not only great story telling, but aspects of science fiction, fantasy, and of course chilling tales of terror.

Without giving reveals and diving too heavily into the story directions, Creepshow often moves between situational tales that involve some form of monster or antagonist. Rather than rooting itself in the style of slasher pieces the series takes the tone of combining science fiction elements, the supernatural and direct horror related short stories. What ads charm is that often there are comical elements whether direct or indirect that basically keep the stories interesting. Make no mistake, horror is the prime focus here though the team of Creepshow have a bit of fun while doing it.

Themes of Creepshow pay some homage to traditional monsters but in short are rooted in providing new ideas and terrors. The FX team wastes no time in coming up with cool original creatures that range from terrorizing to those of the Cthulhu Mythos arena.

Simply said, it’s a much welcome return to the good old days. It’s the inspiring style of “Tales From the Crypt” heightened with 21st century production methods and engaging camera work. It’s a homage to the genre with several iconic acting talents (directly from the horror genre themselves) contributing to this new wave of movie style TV presentation.

The series has officially been released on blu ray by Image Entertainment and can be ordered thru Amazon, boasting a cool 270 minutes worth of viewing material (that’s over 4 hours of TV horror time for those keeping count)

Creepshow Season 1 reunites us with the traditions of yesterday embracing the trends of classic horror provided in short story format. Those who enjoy prior like-TV series such as: “Fear itself”, “Masters of Horror” and the classic “Night Gallery” will feel right at home with these new entries.

Season one is comprised of 6 episodes (2 stories per episode), totaling 12 new tales of horror.

The bluray consists of the following short stories (original authors noted):

Gray Matter by Stephen King

By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain by Joe Hill

The Companion by Joe R. Lansdale

The House of the Head by Josh Malerman

The Man in the Suitcase by Christopher Buehlman

All Hallows Eve by Bruce Jones

Times Is Tough in Musky Holler by John Skipp and Dori Miller

The Finger by David J. Schow

Lydia Layne’s Better Half by John Harrison and Greg Nicotero

Skincrawlers written by Paul Dini and Stephen Langford

Night of the Paw by John Esposito

Bad Wolf Down by Rob Schrab

Let’s face it though, if the content wasn’t there, it simply would work. Creepshow works by uniting its perfect-storm of elements.

Those who have already caught the series will rejoice under the premise that they can now own it for future viewing. Those new to the franchise or series are in for a treat. I leave with you food for thought. How many of you have looked under your bed for a haunting evil head or heard talking from their suitcase?

Good times all around, I’m giving this one a must-see recommendation with an option to buy!
