The president stopped at a relief distribution center to greet search and rescue team members and Cajun Navy volunteers, then surveyed a heavily damaged residential street.
A huge uprooted tree blocked the road, which a team of six National Guard members was working to clear. Trump spoke to the group from the far side of the massive trunk, surrounded by homes with cracked porch columns and shredded roofs.
Few residents were on hand to greet him. Most had evacuated and could not yet return to their homes. But at one corner, a small group of supporters appeared to wave campaign flags and the Stars and Stripes at the passing motorcade.
At a local fire station, the president spoke with federal officials and local representatives, including Louisiana’s Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards.
“If you think of it, Louisiana’s been through a lot,” Trump told the governor. “You’ve done a great job.”
He also singled out Pete Gaynor, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, for praise.
“Already, FEMA has delivered 2.6 million liters of water and 1.4 million meals, and that is a lot of meals, so you are pretty busy, right?” Trump said.
“You have done a hell of a job, Pete,” he added — an echo of the infamous comment made by President George W. Bush to his FEMA director, Michael “Brownie” Brown, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina 15 years ago.
And he promised that federal help would continue.
“We will supply what we have to supply, and you know what that is,” he said. “I think it is all green, right?”
A visit to nearby Orange, Tex. was also on the president’s schedule.
