President Trump says in a new interview that mega-wealthy child abuser Jeffrey Epstein may have been “killed” in prison, and that’s why he wished his alleged accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell “well.”

Trump’s well-wishes for Maxwell at a July 21 press conference sparked speculation about his intent, though the White House said later that he was thinking about Epstein’s August 2019 death when he said it.

The Justice Department says Epstein died alone in his cell and New York City’s medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. Attorney General William Barr said his death was the result of “a perfect storm of screw-ups,” including sleeping guards and broken security cameras.

Asked in an interview with Axios why he would wish someone “well” after they were charged with child sex trafficking, Trump said: “First of all, I don’t know that. But I do know this: Her friend or boyfriend was either killed or committed suicide in jail. She’s now in jail. Yeah, I wish her well. I’d wish you well, I’d wish a lot of people well, good luck. Let them prove somebody was guilty.”

Trump said he was upset at the amount of attention that his remarks received.

“Her boyfriend died in jail and people are still trying to figure out, how did it happen? Was it suicide or was he killed? And I do wish you well. I’m not looking for anything bad for her. I’m not looking bad for anybody. And they took that and made it such, such a big deal. But all it is is, her boyfriend died, he died in jail. Was he killed? Was it suicide? I do, I wish her well,” Trump said.

The interview was filmed last week but aired on Monday night on HBO.

Trump commented on Maxwell in response to a question about whether she would turn in powerful men associated with Epstein, such as Prince Andrew and former President Bill Clinton, to get a lighter penalty.

Trump replied: “I don’t know, I haven’t really been following it too much. I just wish her well, frankly. I’ve met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach, but I wish her well.”

Trump told reporters last year that he had a falling out with Epstein about 15 years prior, but didn’t say why.
