#Tropical Storm Claudette crashes into Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Claudette is dumping huge amounts of rain on the Gulf Coast states as it moves north.

The third named storm of the season brought heavy winds to the region, whipping up waves and raising water levels 13 feet above normal from Southeast Louisiana to Panama City, Florida, the National Hurricane Center tweeted.

The storm came ashore around 4 a.m. Saturday southwest of New Orleans, but the heaviest rains were near the Mississippi-Alabama state line.

Several inches of rain flooded Slidell, Louisiana, northeast of New Orleans, NOLA.com reported. Homes were flooding and many people, including a pregnant woman, were stranded by the waters. Officials were working to clear up to 50 vehicles stalled in the floods.

Flooding was also reported in Biloxi, Mississippi, the Sun Herald reported, where some residents were rescued from rising waters. Thousands of homes also lost power overnight.

More than 6 inches of rain was expected for Southern Alabama and Georgia. Short-lived, weak tornadoes were also possible, according to Fox10 News in Mobile, Alabama.

Claudette was expected to reach Atlanta by evening, when it was likely to weaken to a tropical depression. Flash flooding and tornadoes were a concern for North Georgia, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood and thunderstorm warnings for a wide swath from the Central Gulf Coast through the Tennessee Valley.

The weakened system is forecast to arrive in the New York area as thunderstorms late Monday into early Tuesday.
