The weather rager is set to make landfall in Texas on Monday night, and if it does, it will be the ninth tropical storm or hurricane to hit the US mainland in a single season — for the first time since 1916.
Meteorologists have already been forced into the Greek alphabet to dig up names for this season’s slew of storms after exhausting the English alphabet. Beta is the Greek alphabet’s second letter.
The storm was expected to first batter the coast of Texas with lashing rains, making landfall around Galveston, before moving on to Louisiana by mid-week.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday issued disaster declarations for 29 counties ahead of Beta’s arrival, a move that sends emergency resources to the regions.
