The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel — Northern War has received its first trailer, which previews the protagonist Lavian Winslet and her platoon members Martin S. Robinson, Iseria Frost, and Talion Drake. Voicing the characters are Makoto Koichi, Yuuichi Nakamura, Sarah Emi Bridcutt, and Yuuki Ono respectively.

A key visual of the main characters and main staff information were also released. Hideki Ryouga and Mao Emura (Tsukipro the Animation scriptwriter) are serving as series composers with Mina Oosawa (The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest) as character designer and Shouji Hara (King of Prism -Shiny Seven Stars- character designer) as original character designer. Emura is also the animation story researcher. It was previously revealed that Tatsunoko Production was producing with Hidekazu Satou (Aquarion Logos, Last Hope) as director.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel — Northern War takes place in the year 1205 of the Septian Calendar. Lavian is the granddaughter of a revered North Abrian hero-turned-traitor named Vlad, who joins the Northern Jaegers to prove that she is different from her grandfather. After constant disciplinary violations, Lavian is ordered to form a platoon with Martin, Iseria, and Talion to infiltrate the Erebonian Empire and learn more about the “Hero of the Empire” that threatens North Ambria.

The anime is inspired by Nihon Falcom‘s The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series, which began in 2013. The fourth installment of the games was initially released for PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2018 and in North America and Europe in 2020. Later, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV was released for Nintendo Switch, PC, and Stadia in 2021. The games are part of the larger Trails series that began in 2004, which in turn is part of The Legend of Heroes franchise that dates back to 1989.
