Winds as high as 70 mph were reported in Cumberland County, about 50 miles west of Atlantic City, according to the report.
Gusts of about 65 mph were reported at the Atlantic City Marina — and they’re expected to increase in strength as the storm rips through the coastal section of the state.
Most of the Garden State was placed under tornado watch ahead of the storm, as was New York City, Long Island and the northern suburbs of Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties.
In Delaware, three tractor-trailers were blown over onto their sides as they headed southbound on Route 1 in Townsend, which is about 30 miles south of Wilmington, NBC Philadelphia reported.
A billboard along the roadway was also blown to pieces and siding was ripped off a nearby building, according to the report.
At a press conference Tuesday morning, Mayor de Blasio warned New Yorkers to take seriously the threat of a tornado in the five boroughs.
“It is something to worry about. Take it seriously,” de Blasio said at his daily press briefing. “When you hear of a tornado warning, it’s not business as usual. With these high winds, just secure anything that could fly around.”
