“Tomas Nido starts Mets’ home run barrage against Cardinals”

Here are some notable nuggets that happened during Mets’ spring training action on Sunday:

Hammer Time

Tomas Nido cleared the right-field fence in the second inning for the first of three homers hit by the Mets in their 7-3 exhibition victory over the Cardinals in Port St. Lucie. The blast was the first in the Grapefruit League for Nido, who also homered last week against Carlos Carrasco in an intrasquad game.

Coming along

After a slow start, Pete Alonso doubled and singled for his best game this spring. The first baseman is 3-for-16 (.188) in the Grapefruit League.

Caught my eye

Jake Mangum improved to 3-for-9 (.333) this spring with a single off the bench. A day earlier the outfielder impressed with his defense, sprinting toward the right-field corner to steal a hit.

Monday’s schedule

The Mets will hold an intrasquad game before returning to Grapefruit League action on Tuesday in Jupiter, Fla., against the Marlins.
