The victim was blasted in the head and shoulders when he stepped out of his apartment to walk his dog on 74th Street near Seventh Avenue in Bay Ridge around 6:50 a.m., cops said.
He was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances of the shooting, and the whereabouts of the dog, were not immediately clear.
No one has been arrested, and police are withholding his identification pending family notification.
The shooting marked the first all year in Brooklyn’s 68th Precinct, which covers Bay Ridge.
About 50 minutes earlier on the other side of town, a woman and two men were shot at a BP gas station on 10th Avenue near Sherman Avenue in Inwood, cops said.
A 31-year-old woman was shot in the leg, a 23-year-old man was struck in the right arm and a 29-year-old man was hit in the leg and shoulder.
All three suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.
Around 4:30 a.m., a 31-year-old man was blasted in the left thigh at East Kingsbridge Road and Morris Avenue in the Fordham Manor neighborhood of the Bronx, cops said.
He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooter, wearing a face mask, took off on a motorcycle or scooter.
As hundreds gathered for a pre-dawn West Indian Day celebration around 3 a.m., five were shot — including a 6-year-old and his 47-year-old mother — at the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Crown Street in Crown Heights, cops said.
The boy took a bullet to the left leg while his mother and 40-year-old man were each shot in the left foot, and two other men, 45 and 34, were both blasted in the right leg, according to cops.
All five victims were taken to Kings County Hospital Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The motive was unknown Monday morning, and it wasn’t immediately clear which of the victims, if any, were intended targets.
Sunday night around 11:30 p.m., a 34-year-old man was shot twice in the shoulder on Briggs Avenue near East 149th Street, also in the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx.
He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In total on Sunday, eight shootings were reported with eight victims. One person was killed — a 25-year-old man who was blasted in the head and chest as he sat next to his wife in a car on College Point Boulevard in Queens.

On that day in 2019, three people were shot in three separate incidents. One person was killed.
On Saturday, the city saw three shootings with three victims — one of whom was killed. On that day last year, only one person was shot. Two homicides were reported.
The city has seen 14 straight weeks of surging gun violence. As of Sunday, 1,288 people were shot in 1,054 separate incidents, according to preliminary numbers released by police.
At the same time last year, there were only 556 shooting incidents with 653 victims.
