A California schoolteacher who allegedly coughed on a baby in a San Jose yogurt shop has been fired from her job, according to reports.

The woman, a special education teacher at the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, was caught on video last month at a Yogurtland outlet coughing on the 1-year-old because the child’s mother wasn’t “maintaining proper social distancing,” the San Jose Mercury News reported.

“It happened so quick, I was in shock,” mom Mireya Mora told KGO-TV after the incident. “She got close, took off her mask, and coughed three times super hard on my son’s face.”

“She did it on purpose,” she said. “It’s not like she did it on accident. Oh, cough, cough. No, she purposely coughed on my son’s face.”

Mora, who is Hispanic, added that “this woman may be racist.”

The incident went viral after police released photos from the store camera, which led to threats against the school district. An online petition later got more than 15,000 signatures calling for the district to fire the woman, identified as Nancy Norland.

“We want to inform our community that the district employee who was alleged to have engaged in this conduct is no longer an employee of our district,” school officials said in a statement released this week.

“The Oak Grove School District’s highest priority is the safety of our students and the well-being of all of the children in the community we serve,” the statement said. “We do not tolerate conduct from any employee that compromises any child’s safety.”

Norland, who is white, was standing on line behind the mother on June 12 when she removed her mask, bent down to the baby’s stroller, and coughed two or three times in the child’s face.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the suspect was upset the female was not maintaining property social distancing so the suspects removed her face mask, got close to the baby’s face, and coughed two or three times,” San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said in a statement, CNN reported.

Police told the outlet that the case remains under investigation.
