“#These Broadway shows are selling tickets for September return”
Curtain up! Light the lights! Broadway could be back by Labor Day.
The musicals “Jagged Little Pill” and “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations” are currently on sale beginning with their Tuesday, Sept. 7, performances, although neither has formally announced a return yet.
A spokesman for “Aint Too Proud” confirmed to The Post that the show is now on sale for performances from Sept. 7 to Jan. 2, 2022.
Another musical, “Chicago,” is on sale even earlier, from Aug. 2.
The Post reached out to the other productions to see whether the move is in error, but all three shows are listed on Telecharge, a division of the theater-owning Shubert Organization that is an official seller of Broadway tickets — not an unreliable resale service.
Broadway League president Charlotte St. Martin recently told the Points Guy that some shows were “tentatively holding September dates for reopening or opening,” adding that it may come earlier than that.
“If some miracle happened — the [COVID-19] incidence rate went down dramatically, the vaccination rate went up dramatically — [Broadway’s return] could be sooner,” she said.
All Broadway shows have been closed since March 12, 2020, when Gov. Cuomo shut down venues with more than 500 seats in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Broadway League said last May that its plays and musicals would remain closed through Sept. 6, but that announcement was made long before the United States’ speedy rollout of the vaccines.
Last week, mayoral adviser Dr. Jay Varma was optimistic, saying New York City “can be completely out of this within six to eight weeks of very aggressive vaccination.”
Some city theaters opened on April 2. They currently have a maximum capacity of 150 and testing or vaccination requirements. Broadway theaters, however, seat over 1,000 patrons and cannot profitably operate with social distancing.
The upcoming Broadway musical “Diana” announced last week that it will begin performances again on Dec. 1, and the Hugh Jackman-led revival of “The Music Man” starts previews on Dec. 20.
