A new contract wouldn’t have cured Jamal Adams’ issues with the Jets.

Before Adams was shipped to Seattle in July, the 25-year-old sought to be made the league’s highest-paid safety. Now, though, Adams realizes a contract extension wouldn’t have made his life much better with the Jets.

“Bro, I fought depression in New York,” Adams said on the “All Things Covered” podcast. “And I’m man enough to say it. I came home after a tough loss and just sat in my room in the dark — no phone, no TV. (My dad) hated to see me like that. It killed my pops so much … He was calling my agent at the time and saying, ‘Hey man, I don’t like seeing my son like this. I need him out of this situation.’ It took a toll on my life outside of football.”

In Adams’ three seasons in New York, the Jets went 16-32. Now, instead of being part of the league’s only winless team this season, Adams could make his first career playoff appearance.

“They do not want to win,” Adams said of the Jets. “Let’s be honest, the Jets were the laughingstock. (In Seattle), this is how the NFL is supposed to be. This is the dream I was dreaming.”

Even though Adams claims the team delayed contract negotiations and allegedly badmouthed him around the league as being a poor teammate, Adams said his plan was still to “become a Jet for life.”

But money wasn’t going to buy wins.

“I was bringing the juice back to the Jets,” Adams said. “I simply told them, ‘Hey man, if you guys want to keep me here to be a Jet for life, let’s sit down and talk. This is after the fact they told me, ‘We wanna offer you an extension.’ … I felt like I was being disrespected.

“Money’s a plus, but I love the game of football. I love what I do … I was sick of hearing ‘the rebuild year.’”

Adams’ first season in Seattle hasn’t been all roses. He missed four games with a groin strain and the team lost consecutive games to the Bills and Rams since he returned.

The Seahawks are still 6-3 and in the NFC playoff mix.
