#It’s a different Veterans Day Parade — but you can still honor the service of millions

Like most good things this year, the public Veterans Day Parade has been canceled. But a symbolic march will still go on, to preserve the 101-year tradition of vets marching down Fifth Avenue.

Don’t crowd the proceedings, but do find some way Wednesday to honor the millions of men and women who have served our country — and still do — even if it’s just to take a moment to reflect. Organizers have also set up a number of virtual activities.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 70th anno of the start of the Korean War. Thirty years ago, the Panama Invasion finished up in the spring and Desert Shield began in the late fall. The march will include a 120-vehicle veterans motorcade, a motorcycle ride and wreath layings.

The parade’s featured service branch is the United States Navy, with Navy vet Jared Lyon, the national president and CEO of Student Veterans of America, serving as grand marshal.

You can “join in” via the virtual Line of March, a social-media stream that will roll out more than 200 profiles of regular parade participants. Or listen to WABC’s 90-minute special Veterans Day show from its studios and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

“This year’s Veterans Day commemoration will look a bit different,” United War Veterans Council Executive Director Mark Otto said. “However, we know that our veterans and their supporters will embrace the opportunity to celebrate service while staying safe.”

And: “As we learned in the Marine Corps, ‘Improvise; Adapt; Overcome!’  ”

Their service has kept us safe and free for 2  ½ centuries; they’ve earned your gratitude.
