#PlayStation 5 Smashes Sony Records, Sells 10 Million Consoles Faster Than PS4

Sony’s PlayStation 5 just keeps on winning with the electronics conglomerate announcing that the console, as of July 18, has sold over 10 million units in a little over 8 months or 249 days since release – this is faster than the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and reports from Nintendo for the Nintendo Wii.

While the PS5 reached the 10 million consoles sold milestone in 249 days, the PlayStation 4 reached that number in 271 days. The milestone would have likely been reached earlier if Sony could keep the PS5 in stock with production delays continuing due to the pandemic and other supply issues. Compared to Nintendo, the Switch reached 10 million sales in 9 months, while the first sales report for the Nintendo Wii after the milestone said 13.17 million consoles sold in 10 and a half months. 

The highest-selling game for the console continues to be Spider-Man: Miles Morales, with 6.5 million copies sold over the PS5 and PS4 versions, though skews heavily to the PS5 version of the game. CEO Jim Ryan told GamesIndustry.biz that “engagement on the platform is the highest that we’ve ever seen whichever way you look at it. Whether it’s the number of people measured by a metric such as MAU [Monthly Active Users], or whether it’s the time that these people spend playing games. Both of these metrics are showing very significant double-digit growth compared to the launch window of PS4, the previous high-water mark.”

Ryan singled out the Chinese market as a huge improvement for the company with the PlayStation 5, saying the company is seeing the same sort of demand for the PS5 as the rest of the world. According to Ryan, stock for the console was blown “through very, very quickly.”

Sales numbers for the Xbox line of consoles haven’t been released.

Sony expects to sell 14.8 million PS5 consoles in the 2021 fiscal year (April 2021 to March 2022), and by looking at how many are already sold. It’ll be up to production to keep up rather than demand.
