A couple of years after his parents’ divorce, 17-year-old Nicholas no longer feels he can stay with his mother, Kate. He moves in with his father, Peter and Peter’s new partner Beth. Juggling work, his and Beth’s new baby, and the offer of his dream job in Washington, Peter tries to care for Nicholas as he wishes his own father had cared for him. But by reaching for the past to correct his mistakes, he loses sight of how to hold onto the Nicholas in the present.

The Son features an all-star cast alongside Hugh Jackman, including Laura Dern as Kate, Vanessa Kirby as Beth, and Zen McGrath as Nicholas, as well as George Cobell, Hugh Quarshie and Anthony Hopkins as Anthony.

The Son comes from director Florian Zeller, who has written the screenplay alongside Christopher Hampton, and looks to continue the same authentically dramatic success as the filmmaker’s previous outing The Father. Time will tell whether The Son will garner the same critical acclaim as its predecessor, but no doubt the Academy will be watching very closely.

The Son is Part of a Powerful Trilogy That Includes the Oscar Winning The Father

The Son is based on Florian Zeller’s 2018 play Le Fils, and is one part of a spiritual trilogy from, with the other parts being The Mother and the 2020 Academy Award-winning The Father. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Colman, Rufus Sewell, Imogen Poots, Olivia Williams, Mark Gatiss, and Ayesha Dharker, The Father follows Anthony (Academy Award Winner, Anthony Hopkins) an 80-year-old, mischievous man living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne (Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, Olivia Colman), encouragingly introduces.

Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony’s grip on reality is unraveling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her?

The Father was met with wide critical acclaim, with praise heaped on the performances and the work of director Florian Zeller and his devastatingly empathetic portrayal of dementia. The Father was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with Anthony Hopkins winning for Best Actor and Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton winning for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Son is will have its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 7, 2022, and is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 11, 2022, by Sony Pictures Classics.
