The hotline, part of the NBA’s 113-page memo to teams, was reportedly created to allow players to anonymously report their peers for potential violations of league safety protocols.
As part of the league’s planned restart, players will attempt to maintain a bubble-like atmosphere at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
So far, however, there have been no anonymous reports, according to Yahoo.
The decision to create the hotline drew player reactions in June when it was first reported by The Athletic.
“Oh they snitchin snitchin,” Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell tweeted.
“Snitch hotline lol,” Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma wrote on social media.
Fans across social media also poked fun at who they thought would be most likely to report opponents. Chris Paul was a common candidate, for earlier this season the Thunder point guard snitched on Jordan Bell for wearing an untucked jersey, which is a violation, in a win over the Warriors.
After quarantining for 48 hours upon arrival to the bubble, teams were able to hold their first practices since the hiatus over the weekend. One player, however, already violated the league’s protocols.
Rockets forward Bruno Caboclo inadvertently broke quarantine and will have to spend eight days in isolation, according to ESPN. The infraction was not reported through the hotline.
If players do not follow safety protocols put in place by the league, punishment consists of a warning, a suspension or a campus ban.
