“#The Most Useful Harry Potter Spells For Everyday Life”
But apart from how eventful the wizarding world seems, there’s one thing that can’t be denied—and that’s how practical and resourceful it would be to be able to cast spells. Imagine getting off work, taking a long ride home on public transportation, and arriving to discover that you left your keys at the office. In our muggle life, that would mean wasting what little is left of the afternoon commuting to and from the office, all for a tiny key. In the wizarding world, a simple “Accio keys” would have been enough and, without wasting a minute, you would be unlocking your front door. Even a simple “Alohomora” would have been enough to open the door and begin your afternoon of unwinding. The keys could have waited in the office until the next day.
There are so many everyday situations that could be solved with a little bit of magic if you manage to cast the right spell (or brew the correct potion!). Imagine the amount of time you would save in cleaning and tidying up your house! But before you start thinking about where to invest all this free time, and while we wait for the Harry Potter Reunion to air, here are some of the most useful spells from the Harry Potter world for everyday life.
Accio
A simple, but extremely useful spell. It helps to attract objects towards us from a considerable distance. We could see Daniel Radcliffe, the main character, use this spell in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, more specifically during the Triwizard Tournament, to summon his broom and finish the first task. He then used it to summon the Portkey and escape from Voldemort and the Death Eaters in Little Hangleton graveyard. Molly Weasley also used it to get the twins’ candy, and the twins used it to summon their brooms from Dolores Umbridge’s office.
It’s an ideal spell for when you lose a remote control and don’t want to leave the couch, to locate that shirt you remembered to put in the closet but it’s not there and you have to go out in a couple of minutes…Or even to get the groceries from the supermarket effortlessly!
Scourgify & Tergeo
The Scourgify spell is most commonly used in the books: in Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, Tonks used it to clean Hedwig’s cage in Harry’s room under the stairs, and in the same book, James Potter used it to wash Snape’s mouth after he called Lily a “mudblood.” Furthermore, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hermione taught this spell to Neville to clean frog guts out from under his fingernails.
The second spell, Tergeo, was used by Hermione in the book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to wipe the blood off Harry’s face after Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) had broken his nose. Ron Weasley also conjured this spell in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to get the grease off his handkerchief so he could lend it to Hermione, who was crying. Finally, in that same book, Harry Potter used this spell to remove dust from a few photographs in Bathilda Bagshot’s house.
Locomotor
Once you have cleaned the house with the previous charms, Locomotor will help you tidy up from the comfort of your couch, with no more effort than pointing your wand at an object and moving it as you please.
A variation of this spell was used by Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II in order to bring to life the armored statues in the hallways of Hogwarts.
Alohomora
This spell is especially for the absent-minded, those who, as soon as they close the door, instantly shout “I’ve left my keys inside! With Alohomora you can unlock any door without difficulty. Just remember to bring your wand! No door, chest or lock will stand in your way with this spell.
Fan-favorite Hermione used it in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to enter the forbidden corridor on the third floor with Harry and Ron. She also used it to escape from the flying-key room, but on that occasion it malfunctioned.
Silencio
As its name implies, it silences any sound. No more sleepless nights because of noisy neighbors, you’ll sleep like a log! It is particularly useful when you are working from home and, while you are in a virtual meeting, your pet suddenly starts barking more than usual.
Within the saga, we know that it was the spell used by Remus Lupin’s father (David Thewlis, though almost played by Robin Williams) to silence him during his monthly werewolf transformations for several years, to protect him from any unwanted attention from his neighbors or the Ministry of Magic when Remus was a child.
Reparo
The perfect spell for clumsy people. Reparo, as its name suggests, fixes broken objects and makes them look as good as new.
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the headmaster of Hogwarts Albus Dumbledore cast this spell to repair the damage Horace Slughorn had done to a Muggle house in Budleigh Babberton where he was hiding out. A similar version of this spell, Oculus Reparo, was used by Hermione to fix Harry’s glasses the first day they met on the train to Hogwarts.
Lumos
This spell illuminates the tip of the wizard’s wand, allowing him or her to see in the dark, and it’ s one of those charms that seem unimportant, but really aren’t: imagine the bumps you’d be saving your toes when you walk to the fridge for a late-night snack! Not to mention if you suddenly have a power outage that leaves you in the dark with no candles in your house. You would simply have to conjure Lumos and problem solved.
Lumos has accompanied the main characters of the saga throughout all the films: we saw Harry on many occasions reading with the help of his wand in the middle of the night, or wandering the hallways carefully trying not to be seen by anyone.
