“The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs Gets Renewed for Season 5 at Shudder”

Joe Bob Briggs isn’t going anywhere. It has just been announced that Shudder has renewed The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs for a fifth season on the horror-focused streaming platform. Season 5 will air in 2023, and with the renewal comes additional specials that will premiere later this year that are yet to be announced. Season 4 is set to conclude on July 1, 2022, after each new episode this season to date has trended in the Top 5 nationally on Twitter every Friday night, per Shudder.

“Thanks to the Shudder team for giving us the chance to hang out another year with the greatest fans in media. I’m constantly amazed by their affection and I’m constantly learning from them,” Briggs said in a statement.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“We’re delighted to bring Joe Bob, Darcy and the rest of The Last Drive-in Team back for another season of crazy movies, live tweeting, and the most entertaining commentary on TV,” adds Shudder General Manager Craig Engler. “We’ll also have more special guests and themed holiday episodes, because as Joe Bob says, the drive-in never dies.”

As with prior seasons, new installments of The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs will feature horror movie double features with special guests from the horror genre. Season 4 will feature new in-depth interview with special guests Charles Band, Larry Fessenden, and The Adams Family, among others. The series was originally intended to be a one-off 24-hour marathon that turned out to be such a hit that Shudder turned it into an ongoing series.

Joe Bob Briggs Has Long Been a Fan Favorite in Horror

Longtime horror fans will remember when Joe Bob Briggs hosted MonsterVision on TNT from 1996 to 2000. The series consisted of a similar format with Briggs showcasing old horror films and offering his commentary. Horror fans carrying a continued nostalgia for MonsterVision with a desire to see Briggs back to hosting a horror program helped launch The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs on Shudder in 2018.

“I don’t really have any anxieties because I’m doing the same show I did twice before, starting more than 30 years ago!” Briggs said of the new series on Shudder, per HauntedMTL.com. “It amazes me that I’m allowed to do the same show three times. The difference this time is the closeness the audience feels to me. I can’t really explain it, don’t really understand it, so my greatest anxiety is that I’ll let these people down.”

The first four seasons of The Last Drive-in have showcased a variety of cut classic horror films, including movies like C.H.U.D., The Changeling, WolfCop, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Stuff, Chopping Mall, Maniac, Slumber Party Massacre II, Bride of Re-Animator, Ginger Snaps, The Monster Club, and Head of the Family. Some notable horror stars to appear as special guests include Felissa Rose, Kelli Maroney, Chris Jericho, Tom Savini, Ashley Laurence, Doug Bradley, Adam Green, Kane Hodder, Eli Roth, Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Campbell, Roger Corman, and Svengoolie.
