Drinks on the house?

An enterprising UK man has devised an unorthodox way to raise funds for his first home — by auctioning his expensive Scotch stash.

“I never anticipated the potential it could have for me in my life,” said Birmingham’s Matthew Robinson, 28, who inherited the consecutive vintages of rare Macallan whisky from his dad, who collected them every year since his son was born in 1992.

His father, Pete, started the the annual tradition to celebrate his boy’s birth while working for a company that manufactured raw materials for the top-flight beverage brand.

“I liked the idea that the materials I made would eventually be used in the making of the Scotch,” Pete, 64, told SWNS of the custom.

However, over the years, the father of three noticed that his collection was appreciating by a large margin and started to observe the company more closely.

Despite the fact that he only spent around $6,600 on the hooch, Macallan’s skyrocketing success caused the stash’s value to hit $50,000. Pete’s family tradition had turned into a fortune: they ended up with an 18-year consecutive run of vintages, known as a “vertical.”

“Normally it would take a lot of time and effort to amass a vertical like this,” according to booze brokers Mark Littler LTD who have listed the ritzy whisky for over $50K online. However, “this is the opportunity for a collector to purchase them all instantly,” they said.

Matthew, for one, is thrilled his father left him with a keg to stand on.

“I think it’s been one of the best things he could have done,” said Matthew, who called his inadvertent inheritance “a massive weight off my shoulders — especially in these uncertain times.”

The beef plant employee plans to use the proceeds to place a deposit on a house in Taunton, Somerset, where he resides.

It’s likely Matthew will achieve his goal.

“The Macallan 18-year-old is currently one of the most sought-after single malt Scotch whiskies in the world,” said Littler, “so you’ve got a hot ticket item that is sure to be highly desirable to aspiring whisky collectors and investors.”
