#The coziest fall decor to shop right now, according to a home design expert

If you ask me, it’s never too soon to start decorating your house for fall. Pumpkin-spice season is the best season when it comes to home decor, because it’s all about warm colors, cuddly textures and classic plaid. With a combo like that, you can’t go wrong!

You don’t even have to change out all that much to give your space a cozy fall aesthetic. I’ve learned over my two decades as a home editor that a few small updates, like a fuzzy new throw blanket or pretty scented candle, can truly make an unbe-leaf-able difference in the way your house looks and feeIs.

Another way to amp up the autumn vibes in your house is to layer, just like you do with your clothes. Toss a little sheepskin rug over your carpet or pile a few extra pillows onto your sofa. The snugglier, the better! Get started right here, with my favorite fall finds to buy now.

It’s not fall without at least one pumpkin, right? There are approximately a billion pumpkin decorations out there, but I like this candle for its simple shape and frosted glass jar. Plus, you can’t beat the price: $10 for 12 ounces, or up to 40 hours of fragrance.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I’m all for fake plants — especially when they look as good as this rust-colored arrangement from Joanna Gaines’ popular decor line. The leaves are meant to look like rusted silver dollar eucalyptus, and for $20, you get the pretty ceramic pot too. Fall centerpiece = done.

Natural materials like wood, wool and leather add lots of warmth to a space, and a wood tray is an easy, inexpensive way to make this happen. This tray is covered in burlwood, which comes from a tree’s knots and growths — and is beloved by interior designers for its unique swirling pattern. Unsurprisingly, this cute find is part of Drew Barrymore’s home collection, an editor favorite!

This basket is the epitome of stylish storage: The faux leather looks just-the-right-amount-of-weathered and it has tons of details that make it seem more expensive than it really is. I’d use the small size for books and magazines and the large for firewood.

This wool-blend blanket reminds me of the faux mohair throws at West Elm — but it’s less than half the price! The large-scale plaid pattern combines some of this season’s best colors (gold, cranberry and chocolate brown) in one ultra-soft package.

Oversized bolsters and pillows with rounded shapes are everywhere this year, and this velvet pick represents the best of both worlds. It measures a whopping 21 inches long, so it’s really the only accent pillow you need on an armchair or bed. Find it in six colors, including neutrals like cream and gray. (I also like this velvet sphere if you really want to embrace the round pillow trend).

Anthropologie

I recently went to a home design show in New York City, and it seemed like every brand was displaying colorful glassware. But I haven’t seen anything as special as these candle holders from Anthropologie (they come in a bunch of shapes and colors). Consider it jewelry for your dinner table — all you need are some simple white tapers, and you’ve got instant cozy lighting.

Did you know that overhead lighting is the easiest way to ruin a cozy vibe? I’m exaggerating a bit, but this is the season to embrace ambient lighting, especially rechargeable table lamps. Often used in restaurants, these lights have skyrocketed in popularity thanks to their portability. They look cute nestled on a bookshelf, but because they don’t have cords, they can work pretty much anywhere. I’d keep this gold-tone pick by my bedside or on a patio table (it’s rated for outdoor use).

I bought a sheepskin rug nearly a decade ago and it’s lived in nearly every room of my house. I’ve placed it on the floor by my bed (such a treat for my toes!), over the arm of a sofa and on hard dining chairs to make them a little more comfy. Faux sheepskins like this are available nearly everywhere, but they don’t all have this one’s luxurious shagginess and natural-looking color.

If you’ve shopped for any furniture in the past couple of years, you’ve probably come across the fuzzy, nubby material called bouclé. It’s often white and often covering armchairs. This ottoman shows a different way to use the fabric, and the sage color is just so soothing! I’d pair this ottoman with a neutral armchair and stash all my extra throw blankets inside.

Solo Stove

As someone who has both given and received this tabletop fire pit as a gift, I can confidently say it’s a crowd-pleaser. It has the same modern, smokeless design as a regular Solo Stove (which happens to be our best-reviewed fire pit for 2024), but it’s just 7 inches tall. Use it for a little extra light and heat while dining outside, or — my choice — roasting marshmallows. It comes in stainless steel plus eight colors, including this new metallic bronze.

Crate & Barrel

Let’s be honest: Outdoor fall decor can get a little cheesy. A faux leaf wreath that looks convincing — and can stand up to the elements — can be hard to find! That’s why I’m willing to spend a little more on a piece like this. This Crate & Barrel wreath is lush and comes in beautiful colors, and the quality can’t be beat. Store it carefully when the season’s over and it’ll last for years.

Brooklinen

One foolproof way to add coziness to your house is with textured pieces, and this duvet cover perfectly fits the bill with its woven design. The cream color would be a beautiful backdrop for a patterned wool blanket. And though Brooklinen bedding doesn’t come cheap, I find that it holds up for years — and only gets softer with age — making it well worth the money.
