If there’s anyone who knows about the large amount of anime on the horizon for 2023 it’s a cosplayer. We kicked off this week’s #28DaysOfBlackCosplay features to celebrate the inevitable trips to the fabric store for the likes of JUJUTSU KAISEN, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War and, gentle sob, Pokémon. Today we’re back with more cosplay, more excitement for what’s coming in 2023 and more reminders to finish what you were watching last year to make room for more anime.

Fiker Tesfaye as Itadori (JUJUTSU KAISEN)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Yuji is one of my favorite JUJUTSU KAISEN characters! I love his energy and honesty, so I felt it would be fun to do as my birthday cosplay!
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The hair and the glasses! I love the look and it turned out really nice!
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
JUJUTSU KAISEN always sets the bar so high. With the new season coming out and animating some of the best scenes the manga has to offer, I can't wait to see it with my own eyes!

Kiwi as Sukuna (JUJUTSU KAISEN)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Sukuna instantly drew me to him as a villain who’s evil just because. Also, I wanted to challenge myself and experiment with body paint for the first time.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The body paint took me four hours to do on myself so I am extremely proud of that! And as a closet cosplay, it’s one of the easiest to get together outfit-wise.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
JUJUTSU KAISEN was the anime that re-sparked my joy for anime and cosplaying. With the upcoming season being my favorite two arcs, I’m very excited to see how everything will be animated and see my favorite characters on the screen again.

Mr. Win as Gojo (JUJUTSU KAISEN)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I feel like personality wise I relate the most to Gojo. We both have a lot of confidence in ourselves and similar fashion taste.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
How well it goes with anything I wear. I feel like cosplaying Gojo boosts my fashion sense and my eyes are always a conversation starter.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
Season one left me wanting more. I need to know a little bit more of Gojo’s back story and see how much stronger Itadori gets.

Senpai Lavatron as Nanami (JUJUTSU KAISEN)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Nanami is one of the most beloved characters in the series.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I love the femininity of this photo. I wanted this cosplay to be unique, yet also scream Nanami.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
I have not read the manga, but I heard the upcoming arc is going to be more intense than "The Rumbling" from Attack on Titan.

Kah as Nobara (JUJUTSU KAISEN)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
The fact that I really liked and identified with the character throughout the first season of the anime.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The clothing design, makeup and also the weapons she uses, like the straw doll and the hammer.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
Looking forward to seeing how the characters will develop in the upcoming anime season I can’t wait to see more battles and the growth of some of my favorite characters.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I had just binge-watched JUJUTSU KAISEN and Inumaki was one of my favourite characters so I was pretty inspired to try a closet cosplay of him.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
Definitely how easy it was to do haha. I already had the hair, all I needed to do was the face drawings.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
After binge-watching the anime and watching JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 in the cinema, I’m really excited to see what else the story has in store for us and the characters.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
This was my second time cosplaying as Tanjiro so I wanted to put a twist on his look. I decided to wear an Afro wig and combat boots to create a kick-butt, hardcore Hashira style! No time to play games when you’re slaying demons!
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I love the fact that the Afro makes my cosplay really POP! Demon slayers can have big hair too!
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
This is my most anticipated anime of 2023 because I’m so excited to get to know more about the Love and Mist Hashira! I can’t wait to learn about their backstories and their signature techniques!

Tobi Yusuf as Nezuko (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I just really liked Nezuko as a character! She's very cute, but she can also fight!
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I love the pink kimono she wears because it's my favorite color!
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
This is my most anticipated anime of 2023 because we’ll get more Nezuko and we will meet more Hashiras!!

Rengokustsuguko as Shinobu, Kanao and Upper Moon 2 Doma (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
What inspired you to do these cosplays?
I love Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba a lot. For me, Kanao sticks out the most in the show, but I also wanted to cosplay a villain so I did one of my favorites: Upper Moon 2 Doma.
What's something you love about these cosplays?
With Shinobu, I love the whole outfit and the unique design of the cloak. With Kanao I love the butterfly clip and with Doma, I love the contacts. That was my first time trying contacts and Doma's eyes really stick out.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
Because Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is coming back and ufotable is about to blow our minds again.

Chris Yenn as Hawks (My Hero Academia)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Hawks is one of my favorite characters in the series. I feel like his personality kind of resembles my own. He's laid back and cool. Also, he's got drip because of the red feathers.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The feather swords I made.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
As a geek, I was inspired by many cosplayers, and I wanted to show people my inspired looks. So while searching online I decided I wanted to be a cosplayer myself. My goal is to motivate other people to cosplay.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I love how people have different styles and techniques for their make-up, styling wigs and adding various accessories to cosplaying. My favorite thing is expressing myself to bring a character to life.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
The enjoyment I get from cosplaying my favorite characters from this anime, especially the character design, is intriguing. I'm expecting more engaging topics for the future of this show.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I’ve cosplayed Deku before and wanted to do it again, especially because of this current season.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
The mask (especially the major upgrade in my other photo set).
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
My Hero Academia is such a cool anime, this year this season is all about action. And I'm here for it.

Grace Jackson as Dark Mage Mimikyu (Pokémon)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I always saw Mimikyu as this cool, dark and mysterious creature, and I’ve never seen anything that was like a mage/Final Fantasy spin-off cosplay for Pokémon. It originally started off as a magical witch girl, but then my initial sketch turned more into a mage.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
Honestly, the staff is my favorite part. I imagined it the way it came out. And I trusted the process during the whole thing although I never used worbla before. So that could be the main reason.

Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
Honestly, I’ve been getting back into Pokémon lately and this was a cosplay I've had in mind for a while now.

Todd Wayy as Ash Ketchum (Pokémon)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I grew up watching Ash become an amazing Pokémon trainer with the goal of catching them all.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I was nostalgic thinking about how so much time has passed, but no matter what Ash has remained the same.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
We’re actually seeing Ash fulfill his dream and the end of what seemed to be an endless journey.

Marvin as Brock (Pokémon)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
Pokémon had such a tremendous impact on my childhood, both from playing the games and watching the show. That said, Brock was always a character I connected with because there wasn’t much Black representation in many of the shows I was seeing onscreen. Brock is one of the OG crew members of the Pokémon series and the hopeless romantic remains one of my favorite characters to this day. It’s going to be bittersweet seeing the series finally retire Ash and the OG storyline this year.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I love how I have an excuse to carry a random frying pan.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
I’ve probably logged more hours studying competitive Pokémon team builds than actually studying my coursework during my 4.5 years of undergrad. That said, the Pokémon series has a special place in my, and many others, hearts, so it’s going to be tough seeing the OG journey come to its conclusion.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I’ve been asked to speak at Comic-Con a few times about ADHD and Neurodiversity in film and TV. I’ve previously cosplayed as superheroes but I was keen to cosplay as a scout from Attack on Titan because it’s the first anime I’ve been deeply obsessed with. I love that fear, control, survival, death and power are what drive both Eldians and Marylians in the centuries-long war. Also, kids on both sides have a huge responsibility for the survival of each race.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
It took me forever to put it together! I love how realistic the training gear looks with the chest and leg harnesses, it gave me a great idea of how constrained the scouts must have been wearing all of the maneuver gear. It was also great that I bumped into 3 other people at Comic-Con that were dressed as scouts and I received many compliments.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
I haven’t read the manga so I’m super excited to see whether Eren’s plan succeeds in the end! I’m hopeful that it doesn’t come to that and Mikasa and Eren get to him first.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I love Black Clover because it is all about overcoming prejudice and becoming the best version of yourself. Can’t wait for the movie!
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I’m doing Mereoleona because she is strong, fierce and believes anyone can achieve their goals if they are determined.

Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
It’s my favorite anime and I’m glad that we’re finally having a movie come out.

Nekoyasha as Enkidu (Fate/strange Fake)
What inspired you to do this cosplay?
The Epic of Gilgamesh is my favorite Epic Tale. And I love how the Fate franchise kept the elements of the story and made it fit the characters for the anime. Enkidu loves humanity and wants to learn about others just like I do.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
It is the most comfortable cosplay ever. It's a giant Kaftan and leggings.
Why is this your most anticipated anime of 2023?
Fate/strange Fake is such a deep story and so well written. I never thought it would be animate.

What inspired you to do this cosplay?
I like magical girls and it was a pretty cute series.
What's something you love about this cosplay?
I made it from scratch! I also made the wig as well. It really inspired me to keep going with cosplay because I liked how it came out.
