“#The 5 Most Powerful DC Villains of All Time”
What makes a good villain? Is it the costume? The motivation? Some villains are just as everlasting in the minds of fans as their heroic counterparts. The villains make the actions of the hero worthwhile. What would be the point of our favorite comic book heroes if their villainous foils did not exist? But some baddies fly high above the rest. Some pose threats that require everything has hero has and makes for one entertaining film. These are the five most powerful DC villains of all time.

Ares
Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, was a welcome addition to the DC Cinematic Universe. Die-hard fans recognize Lynda Carter as the first Wonder Woman, but Gal Gadot and Jenkins brought the Amazonian to life on the big screen for the first time in a remarkable way. This was no disco-era romp with limited production value; this Wonder Woman film was given the same treatment that Batman was given across several different films.
Wonder Woman has faced a plethora of unique villains, but none as powerful as Ares. Played by British actor David Thewlis, Ares pretends to be an ally named Sir Patrick, until his villainous reveal in the third act as God of War and Wonder Woman’s brother. Instead of arguing for peace like he pretended to, Ares’ diabolical plan was to bring about the end of humanity through an all-out extinction-level event in the form of the first World War. Ares’ plan may not have been as nuanced as others, but his titanic battle with Wonder Woman stood out as one of the highlights of the film and proved that the God of War was a force to be reckoned with.

Bane
Batman is typically challenged mentally by villains who aren’t able to go toe to toe with him physically. Bane, however, is a villain that matches the Dark Knight on both the mental and physical planes. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises showcased Bane’s power as he faced off against the Caped Crusader. Bane, played Tom Hardy, gave Batman a run for his money as he set out to destroy Gotham once and for all. While carrying out his master plan, Bane carried out the breaking of the Batman, a brutal scene taken straight from the comics as Bane broke Batman’s back with his devastating knee.
For a moment, all seemed lost. Bane had Batman beat and even went so far as to take the entire city of Gotham hostage. Naturally, the Bat had the last laugh as he beat Bane to a pulp in their rematch. Nonetheless, Bane still proved to be one of Batman’s and the DC Universe’s most formidable villains.

General Zod
Man of Steel introduced a more dynamic version of Superman — one whose otherworldly super strength could finally be visualized on the big screen in a way that was only truly seen in animated form. This Superman required a nemesis that could take a punch and fight back with a ferocity unlike any villain seen before. That villain was General Zod. The Man of Steel’s version of Zod was a Kryptonian general hellbent on restoring his homeworld.
Zack Snyder’s depiction of General Zod demonstrated just how epic modern superhero films could be. His fight with Superman across the destroyed cityscape of Metropolis remains a standout piece of superhero cinematography. Despite the controversy surrounding the massive destruction between the two battling Kryptonians, it was still a sight to behold to watch them battle it out.
2
Doomsday
It isn’t a simple feat to kill Superman. Doomsday was able to do it in one film. Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice included a series of firsts: It was the first film to include both Batman and Superman and it was the feature film debut of Wonder Woman and Doomsday. Adding Doomsday was another surprise in a film filled with amazing moments.
Audiences expected a battle between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel but they were shocked to find that Superman would actually die at the hands of Doomsday. Snyder took inspiration from the iconic Death of Superman comic in his depiction of the film’s climax. While this version of Doomsday was a creation of Lex Luthor as opposed to an ancient Kryptonian monster, he still packed a serious punch.

Steppenwolf
It takes a serious threat to bring the entire Justice League together. Steppenwolf was that serious threat. Their first adaptation onscreen found the Justice League fighting the powerful New God, Steppenwolf. The villain hailing from the hellish planet, Apokolips, arrived on Earth to recover the powerful Motherboxes but ended up having to face Batman, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Wonder Woman. Despite the combined forces of the heroes, Steppenwolf was able to hold his own until the resurrection of Superman.
Of course, there were two different versions of Steppenwolf on screen. The first was Joss Whedon’s theatrical version of the character, a much-maligned version due to questionable CGI and a lack of a compelling backstory. Despite his flaws, this depiction was still a capable villain that was able to hold his own against a pantheon of DC heroes. Zack Snyder’s finished version, however, was a juggernaut. He thrashed the Amazonians in spectacular fashion and was frightening as he rampaged through the likes of the Atlanteans and the Justice League until meeting his end. Snyder’s version also had a deeper backstory, which fans learned as he set out to complete his mission.
