A Texas couple is facing felony charges after their 1-week-old son was found dead in a five-gallon bucket of tar, authorities said.

Roland Grabowski, 42, and Donna Grabowski, 41, of Princeton, were arrested Saturday after deputies responded to their home regarding a possible unreported death of an infant, the Collin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The couple refused to cooperate with authorities and were placed under arrest on child endangerment charges. They then told deputies that they found their baby boy, Micah, dead in their bed when they woke up on July 29, sheriff officials said.

Investigators later obtained a warrant to search the couple’s residence and found the infant submerged in a five-gallon bucket of tar in a shed behind the home, Sheriff Jim Skinner told WFAA.

The couple told “numerous lies” as detectives interviewed them, including that the boy was staying with a friend at the time, according to arrest warrants obtained by the station.

“There was an attempt to deceive us as to what had happened and the whereabouts of their child Micah,” Skinner said.

The couple even went so far as to text a friend to ask if they could “say your baby is ours,” warrants show.

“Quick in and out,” the text read, according to deputies. “They just need to see.”

Donna Grabowski told detectives that Micah was born at a hospital in McKinney, but officials there had no record of the birth, WFAA reports.

The couple had told friends their son died of sudden infant death syndrome, warrants show.

“They took the child and wrapped him in a blanket and submerged him in a five-gallon bucket of tar and put him in a shed behind the residence,” Skinner told WFAA.

An autopsy to determine the boy’s cause of death is still pending.

“I’ve been in this business over 30 years and I’ve seen a lot of crazy things, but this is the first time I’ve found a dead infant in a bucket of tar … and hopefully the last,” Skinner said.

Roland Grabowski, who is listed as a registered sex offender in the state’s registry, has been charged with child endangerment, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence with an intent to impair a human corpse.

Donna Grabowski is facing the same counts, as well as tampering with physical evidence. More felony charges against the couple in the boy’s death are expected, sheriff officials said.

An attorney for Donna Grabowski could not be reached for comment Wednesday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
