A Texas city has ordered certain businesses to keep track of customers in order to help contain potential coronavirus outbreaks, according to a report.

The city of Laredo approved a new rule Tuesday that requires adult-oriented businesses, such as bars and bingos, to document anyone who enters their premises to improve contact tracing efforts, the Laredo Morning Times reported.

They will have to take down patrons’ names, addresses and phone numbers — then submit the information each week to health officials, the outlet reported. Any violations will result in a $1,000 fine.

Laredo is located on the Mexican border, about 150 miles southwest of San Antonio, and home to about 261,000 people.

The decision comes as the Lone Star State has seen the number of new cases and coronavirus patients on the rise.

Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday he anticipated the state would again hit 5,000 new coronavirus cases and more than 4,000 hospitalizations for the second day in a row.

“There is a massive outbreak of COVID-19 across the state of Texas,” Abbott told news station KFDA-TV.

There have been at least 122,000 cases recorded among Texans so far, including 2,236 deaths, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.
