“Texans’ Deshaun Watson getting offers from Saints, Panthers”

The Saints and Panthers appear to be the clubhouse leaders to acquire Deshaun Watson.

Both teams have made offers for the Texans quarterback, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, following a grand jury ruling Friday that Watson would not face criminal charges for sexual misconduct.

The Saints and Panthers, however, aren’t the only teams involved, as the floodgates have now opened for a deal with charges no longer hanging over Watson’s head. Watson reportedly has a no-trade clause and wants to meet with teams before waiving it.

He would be a logical fit in either New Orleans or Carolina. The Saints went 9-8 last year with a motley crew of Jameis Winston, Trevor Siemian and Taysom Hill playing quarterback, and would jump up a level with Watson under center. The Panthers owned a 5-12 record juggling their starting spot between Sam Darnold, Cam Newton and P.J. Walker.

Watson didn’t play in 2021 due to the charges levied against him, but led the league with 4,823 passing yards in 2020. He led the Texans to the playoffs in 2018 and 2019 before things fell apart in 2020.

The Panthers have been linked to Watson for some time, trying to trade for him last season before allegations came to light and with ESPN reporting Saturday that the team will make an “aggressive” run for the QB.

The Dolphins were reportedly a suitor for Watson ahead of the trade deadline, ultimately declining to pull the trigger, but they haven’t yet been named as one this time around. The Vikings, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Steelers, Eagles and Colts are teams to watch in the Watson sweepstakes as well, with the Browns having “done their homework” on him as well, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Watson still faces civil lawsuits from 22 massage therapists who are accusing him of sexual misconduct, and sat for two depositions related to those cases on Friday. Watson invoked the Fifth Amendment, declining to answer questions on the grounds the answers could incriminate himself, during two civil depositions on Friday. He has publicly denied wrongdoing. His attorney, Rusty Hardin, has said that the sexual acts described by massage therapists were consensual.

“When you stand on the TRUTH, the LORD will FREE you!” Watson tweeted on Friday night.

The NFL’s personal conduct investigation into Watson also remains open, per The Athletic, with the league having spoken to 10 of his accusers but not him. That means it’s still possible Watson could face a suspension, but that doesn’t seem to have put off potential suitors.

Watson was not suspended last season and was paid by the Texans, though he didn’t play and was not a part of the team.
