Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. was reportedly hospitalized overnight last month after he fell and injured his head at a Maryland country club.

Roberts’ head was covered in blood before the 65-year-old was transported to the hospital via ambulance after the incident at the Chevy Chase Club on June 21, a source told the Washington Post.

Roberts was treated with sutures and discharged the next day, according to the report.

While Roberts had previously experienced seizures twice before in 1993 and 2007, doctors ruled out that he had suffered another during the fall, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg told the Washington Post.

“The Chief Justice was treated at a hospital on June 21 for an injury to his forehead sustained in a fall while walking for exercise near his home,” Arberg said in a statement. “The injury required sutures, and out of an abundance of caution, he stayed in the hospital overnight and was discharged the next morning.

“His doctors ruled out a seizure,” she went on. “They believe the fall was likely due to light-headedness caused by dehydration.”

It wasn’t immediately clear why Roberts’ fall was not previously disclosed publicly.

Roberts suffered what the court described as “a benign idiopathic seizure” in July 2007 at his summer home in Maine and was hospitalized then as well after receiving minor scrapes when he fell.

The chief justice has risen in prominence in recent months. After overseeing the Senate impeachment proceedings for President Trump, he’s become a pivotal member close to the center of left- and right-leaning judges.

Roberts this term joined major decisions that struck down a restrictive Louisiana abortion law and ruled that LGBT workers are protected from job discrimination.
