Talib Kweli has filed a lawsuit against Jezebel. The rapper is reportedly seeking $300,000 for emotional distress following the publishing of a 2020 article.

Per Pitchfork, who viewed the legal documents, Talib believed the article titled “Talib Kweli’s Harassment Campaign Shows How Unprotected Black Women Are Online and Off” caused him “negligent infliction of emotional distress.”

The Blackstar MC claimed he went “into a depression state of loss of appetite, sleeplessness, edgy, anxiety, and discomfort around certain women due to being targeted.”

In addition to Jezebel, the author Ashley Reese and parent company G/O Media are also named as defendants in the suit.

The article went into detail regarding Talib’s permanent ban from Twitter and his contentious 2020 social media interactions with a Black woman named Maya Monroe who inadvertently suggested he was a colorist.

The “Get Em High” rhymer claimed he was acting in self-defense in an effort to clear his name and defend his family.

Monroe claimed that the rappers named in a list married to Black women were allegedly partners with light-skinned Black women.

Talib took issue with the idea and fired back at Monroe, reminding her he was married to a Black woman. Kweli accused Monroe of tagging his wife DJ Eque — which was disputed — but from there, the exchange just spiraled out of control.

The $300,000 in damages figure is based on Talib’s claims that he lost out on 50 percent of his possible salary over the last two years due to backlash from the article.
