Fiat

With Thanksgiving in the rearview mirror, the holiday car sales are in high gear as manufacturers crank up their year-end clearance sales. This year presents its own challenges as the industry sorts through a year that has seen the pandemic shut down production. Only now are inventory levels returning to normal. As a result, even though many makes have holiday sales events, and you’ll find fewer incentives on models in short supply. The more generous offers are reserved for slower moving products, like midsize sedans and compact cars.

The deals will also differ from past practices. Gone are the big discounts or cashback offers, and in their place, you are likely to find more lease deals, 90-day no-payment and zero/low-interest loan offers from the manufacturers’ captive finance arms. We’ve rounded up a few of the best deals you can expect in the waning days of 2020.

Safe shopping tips

As coronavirus cases tick up across the country, you may not be able to visit the dealership in person on the biggest shopping day of the year. Many deals can are available online, though. Depending on where you live, check with the individual dealers to see how they keep everyone safe. You’ll likely need to schedule test drives and appraisals very early to avoid crowding and be sure that you have enough time to check out the vehicle you want.

It also pays to know what you’re shopping for even before you venture out to a dealership. Be prepared for longer-than-normal waits as the dealerships sanitize vehicles and safely work with customers. It pays to come preapproved for financing. You should also do a quick check online to ensure that your local dealer offers the same discounts we mention here, as some are location-based and available only to well-qualified buyers with good credit.
