The hospital’s leadership and workers knelt for eight minutes and 46 seconds — the length of time that prosecutors believe Floyd was pinned to the ground as he struggled to breathe under the knee of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
“It could’ve been anybody. It could be your son, my son,” said Margaret Boyd, wearing blue scrubs and a face mask during the demonstration. “They’re supposed to be there to protect us, not kill us.”
Workers at the Borough Park facility held pictures of Floyd and chanted “black lives matter,” with some taping the words he and Eric Garner both shouted as they died — “I can’t breathe” — to their scrubs.
“While we all feel all lives matter, at this movement, it is black lives matter,” said Maimonides President and CEO Kenneth Gibbs, who took part in the event. “And fundamentally, as a matter of history, this nation was formed with a Constitution with a fundamental flaw, it was to establish justice and secure the blessing of liberty and it codified racism and inequality.”
The NYPD accommodated the peaceful protest by shutting down a block of traffic outside of the hospital and a chief in attendance posed in photos with workers to show support.
“We had a hard fight; we’re still fighting,” Boyd said. “We need to live in love and unity now. This is our world. Not their world, white world, black world — our world, you know? This is a diverse country and we need to get along.”
Eileen Tynion, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said the facility was prepared for the demonstration and made proper accommodations to ensure all patients were cared for.
