“#Two Staten Island schools close due to COVID-19 infections”
Susan Wagner High School and P.S. 48 were both ordered shut after two or more people in each school tested positive for the coronavirus within a seven-day period.
“While New Yorkers have done an outstanding job fighting the virus, leading to extremely low infection rates citywide, COVID-19 is still active in our city, state and our country,” read a note on PS 48’s website. “There will be cases of COVID-19 this school year; we know this and all of our protocols have been in service of fighting this virus.”
Each school will close for 24 hours while the city conducts investigations and the buildings are cleaned.
Students will transition to remote learning.
The Department of Education is conducting random testing of students and teachers in all city schools to help guard against coronavirus outbreaks.
To reassure parents that city classrooms are safe, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza have stressed minimal infection rates at schools.
