#Shakira Feels She “Used to Overdo” Her Vocal Yodel When Singing

While opening up about her past vocal technique, Shakira said she feels like she used to “overdo” her signature yodel on her older songs.

The Colombian superstar appeared on a recent episode of Hot Ones, where host Sean Evans asked what makes her “cringe or wince” when listening to her music from early in her career.

“So many things. I think I used to overdo the cries in my voice,” Shakira said, before briefly showing off her iconic yodel. “I think it was exaggerated. A little baroque. You know?”

“Too much Shakira,” she quipped.

The “Whenever, Wherever” singer, who recently released her 12th studio album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran in March, explained why she feels like she’s grown as an artist, including her voice becoming much stronger over the years.

“I noticed that after my pregnancies, my voice got thicker, more rounded, more full,” the Grammy-winning artist said, referring to her two sons with whom she shares with her ex-partner Gerard Piqué. “Also, my choices are more mature. I have evolved as a woman, as a person, my intellect has evolved.”

Earlier in the interview, Evans specifically referenced her recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, where the singer said she “used to suck.”

“I feel that my voice keeps changing over the years, and I tell my [sons Milan and Sasha] that,” Shakira said at the time. “I sometimes listen to some music of mine with them. Not on purpose, but it just happens, you know, maybe some a song, some comes out on the playlist or on the radio or whatever.”

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer continued, “I say, ‘I used to suck. But, I think I’ve evolved.’ I like myself much better now as an artist, but that’s only me.”
