#NJ Republicans call for mayor to resign over anti-Trump post

A Democratic New Jersey mayor is getting heat for calling President Trump an “orange monster” and conservative Supreme Court justices “religious zealots” in a Facebook post, according to reports.

Republican leaders across the state are calling for the resignation of Flemington Mayor Betsy Driver for the post that was screen-grabbed by the Hunterdon County Republican Committee, TAPinto reported.

Driver was venting about Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s recent comments against same-sex marriage.

“This is day one of the new SCOTUS term; the religious zealots want to enact the Christian version of Sharia law,” Driver wrote on her private page on Oct. 5. “If you voted for the orange monster with COVID, go f–k yourself. If you plan on voting for him again, unfriend me and go f–k yourself again.”

Hunterdon GOP Chair Gabe Plumer said Driver’s statement was “particularly shameful and insulting.”

“While I don’t quite know where to begin, I do know where to end: Mayor Driver, you should resign and you should do it now,” Plumer wrote on the GOP’s website.

“Your statement is antithetical to the principles of representative democracy. It is further proof that you do not represent the people of Flemington, the character of Hunterdon County, and the values of at least a part of the Democrat party.”

NJ GOP Chair Doug Steinhardt issued a similar statement, calling on Driver to “apologize for her inflammatory and derogatory Facebook post.”

Former New Jersey Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, who is running for the Republican nomination in next year’s gubernatorial race, also slammed Driver’s “vitriolic language” as “totally unacceptable.”

“By any elected official, it has no place whatsoever in the public discourse,” Ciattarelli tweeted. “I join with Chairman Plumer in calling for Driver’s resignation & urge leaders across our state to do the same.”

Driver is a member of the LGBTQ community and married Loretta Borowsky in 2013, NJ.com noted.

Plumer was also blasting her for deciding to paint over a thin blue line — in support of law enforcement officers — on Main Street in Flemington ahead of a Black Lives Matter protest in June, the outlet reported. The blue line has since been repainted twice.

Driver, meanwhile, attacked the Hunterdon County GOP for allegedly cropping her original Facebook post.

“That they are that triggered and clutching their pearls over my being upset and angry at the threats to my LGBTQ family by a Supreme Court enabled by their support of a president who is hate-filled and unhinged every day is sad,” Driver told TAPinto.

“It reflects their privilege that refuses to acknowledge America’s diversity and their own intolerance of anyone who disagrees with them. By not calling out their own supporters who are now resorting to personal attacks and threats on me and my family just shows how depraved the Hunterdon GOP has become.”
