Some more news has come up in regard to the Apple vs Epic Games lawsuit. Epic’s Apple Store developer account had been suspended since they had violated the guidelines of the Apple Store in 2020. However, even with the ruling that came out earlier this month, the future of Epic’s apps in regard to Apple is unclear.

Apple has stated that the Epic Games’ App Store developer account will be reinstated only after all the trials have been completed in court. This is expected to take years.

“Apple has exercised its discretion not to reinstate Epic’s developer program account at this time. Furthermore, Apple will not consider any further requests for reinstatement until the district court’s judgment becomes final and non-appealable”.

Apple also noted that the judge in the case had confirmed that Apple was within its rights to remove Epic’s and Epic-related accounts from the App Store as it desires.

The court ruling had stated that Apple was not monopolizing the store, but that its prohibition of cheaper in-app purchase prices by developers was anti-competitive. Apple was given 90 days to remove this policy, and to allow third-party payment platforms by developers.

Apple has been allowed to retain the ban on Epic and its games since Epic had breached this guideline of introducing a direct payment platform in Fortnite. Epic was also ordered to pay Apple about 30% of the revenue it made from the direct payment platform.

Following this, Epic had filed an appeal to the decision on the 12th of September. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, mentioned that Apple has lied to the world; that they have been allowed to abuse their monopoly power yet again.

While at the current stage, Epic seems to have been defeated, with Apple calling the ruling a victory and being able to retain the ban on Epic, the guideline that Epic had contested has been done away with. We will have to wait and see what happens further with Epic’s appeal.
