Story (7/10)

Ms. Hiratsuka organizes a training camp to “socialize” the members of the volunteer club. Reluctantly, Hachiman takes part, only to find that they have to look after a group of elementary school students at the training camp. They receive strong support from Hachiman’s sister Komachi, Saika and Yumiko’s clique. The fact that the girls present themselves in their bathing suits during the training camp makes even Hachiman’s cynical heart open. But elementary school student Rumi Tsurumi quickly pulls him back down. Can the club help the little loner …?

Personaly thinking (Warning, spoilers!)

While the focus of the first volume was more on the comedy aspect, the second disc offers us an interplay between fun and seriousness. For example, there is a conflict between Yui and Hachiman when the latter learns that it was Yui’s dog that he saved from a car accident. He therefore comes to the conclusion that Yui is treating him kindly for this reason alone. However, when he utters this thought, it hurts her feelings. Only later does their relationship “restart”.

In my opinion, the actual cause of the conflict was staged well. But I found the dissolution of it a little too exaggerated. The difficult balancing act between pathos and kitsch was therefore not entirely successful in this case.

I had expected a little more in advance from the stay at the holiday camp, which the helper club spends in the later episodes. Here the mood was dampened by the excluded elementary school student Rumi. Finally, Hachiman and Co. implement a plan so that Rumi can regain access to her classmates.

However, the outcome of the action leaves the viewer rather unsatisfied. In my opinion, it was not clear enough here whether the intervention of the helper club really initiated a change.

Animations (7.5 / 10)

The responsible studio Brain’s Base did a very solid job with the animations on episodes 5 through 8 too. In the second volume, I think we get to see more varied locations, such as the shopping mall or the holiday camp. This shows that the background is quite convincing. However, if you pay attention to the surroundings of the main characters, you often discover stiff passers-by. However, this is a typical problem with anime TV series.

This is balanced out by the sometimes simple but effective character designs. I would also like to highlight the coloring again, which I think is very successful. Overall, the anime offers a slightly simpler look compared to the later seasons, but has a coherent overall picture.

Music (8/10)

The song “Yukitoki” by Nagi Yanagi continues to function as the opening of episodes 5 to 8. This is a reason to be happy for me, as the song has already become a catchy tune for me.

Regarding the ending, there is some variation to be noted. Although all the episodes are still “Hello Alone”, we are also presented with a ballad version. This will be performed by Yui’s original Japanese speaker with piano and string accompaniment. For me this version was a welcome surprise, as tracks like this are usually more likely to be found on soundtrack CDs and are not always used in the actual anime. You can listen to the ballad here:

As for the background music in the episodes, I couldn’t really judge this in the last review. After Volume 2, these pieces have stuck in my head and in my opinion fit the series well, as both light everyday situations and more serious scenes are well covered.

German localization (8/10)

The German dubbing of “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” was created in the G&G Studios in Kaarst. Tom Sielemann was responsible for the dialogue book, Richard Westerhaus directed the dialogue. In episodes 5 to 8, too, I was very satisfied with the performance of the speakers and the cast of the new characters. Mayke Dähn, for example, differs in its timbre from the Japanese model, but in my opinion it is a very appropriate one (perhaps even more appropriate) Choice for Yukino’s sister Haruno.

In addition, I continue to like Felix Mayer on Hachiman very much. In a scene in which Hachiman starts to laugh, the German version appeals to me more than the Japanese original. While there is a lot of silence between a few sounds in the original, Mayer’s laughter seems much funnier.

My only major criticism is again the mix. In episodes 5 to 8, the “podcast” feeling, which I already described in the first review, continues through a compressor effect. This also makes certain nuances in the timbre disappear, which I think is a shame.

I also noticed the poor mix of the ending song in episode 8. If you compare the German and Japanese soundtracks, you can see that the former seems to have lost most of the stereo spectrum. The dynamics have also suffered noticeably. I can only speculate whether the error was in the IT track or a bad post-processing. In both cases, however, this could have been avoided.

As usual, many elegantly inserted translations can be observed in terms of image processing. Only once was a (very obvious) Japanese overlay forgotten. However, due to the otherwise high-quality processing, I can overlook this.

Packaging & Extras (7.5 / 10)

The second volume also comes as a mediabook, which also leaves a very valuable impression. However, when I looked into the slipcase, I had my first doubts as to whether all volumes would really fit in it. The volumes are already apparently taking more than two thirds of the slipcase space. If you consider the production errors that have been increasing at several anime publishers lately, I am concerned that it might not have hit AniMoon this time around.

As with Volume 1, the Mediabook again contains a glued-in booklet and a sticker sheet. Here, too, the stickers seem more like a “pseudo-extra” instead of a serious addition. Since the stickers are only speech bubbles, they can unfortunately hardly be used otherwise. Apart from that, all fans of acrylic figures can look forward to a Yui display this time. The chibi design is again quite successful.

Apart from the obligatory clean version of the new ending animation (including the “Yui Ballad” version) there are no other extras on the disc itself.

Conclusion

Overall, in the second volume, in addition to the usual comedy interludes, for the first time, the viewer also gets to feel conflicts and a more serious atmosphere. The slight puffing up of the events is not exactly unusual in the genre, which can sometimes seem kitschy.

With regard to the German publication, there are slight deficiencies in the mix as well as a possible problem of a too narrow collective thrust. Hopefully with regard to the last point, this concern will not come true when the third volume is released.

Nevertheless, “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” can still convince with an interesting main character, beautiful animations and a well-chosen German speaker cast.

So I am looking forward to the conclusion of the first season, which will be told in Volume 3. Whether one of the OVAs for the series will also await us remains a surprise.
