You might know Matty Matheson the chef and you might know Matty Matheson the actor (he plays handyman Neil Fak in The Bear, a show about chefs) but get ready to meet Matty Matheson the rock star.

Pig Pen is a hardcore band started by Matheson alongside Wade MacNeil of Alexisonfire, guitarist Daniel Romano, drummer Ian Ski Romano, and Tommy Major on bass.

Matheson announced his involvement in Pig Pen on Instagram, writing: “A FEW OLD FRIENDS GOT TOGETHER A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND WROTE AND RECORDED 10 SONGS OVER 2 DAYS. WE JUST WANTED TO HANGOUT AND SEE WHAT’S UP.”

“Just when you thought I couldn’t possibly join ANOTHER band,” MacNeil wrote on his Instagram. “WE GO AND START PIG PEN.”

Most people start bands when they have little else going on. Not Matheson, who made his name as a chef in Toronto and held the position of executive chef at Parts & Labour until it closed in 2019. At the same time he began hosting Vice cooking shows such as Dead Set on Life and It’s Suppertime!. He now runs numerous restaurants across Ontario as well as helming wo fashion brands and a farm.

He initially worked on The Bear as a consultant before being offered an on-screen part as Fak, a handyman who helps out at the restaurant the series centers around.

Pig Pen will play their first live show on April 25 at Toronto venue Sneaky Dee’s in Toronto. The show is sold out but you can hear a sneak preview of the band’s music below.
