#New Biden poll signals warning signs for Democrats this November

“New Biden poll signals warning signs for Democrats this November”

A new Siena College poll has warning signs for President Joe Biden and other Democrats in the Empire State in what could be bruising elections for their party later this year.

Just 35% of respondents say President Biden is doing a “good” or “excellent” as president while 37% and 25% respectively say the state and country are heading in the right direction.

Such numbers could help sink Democratic hopes of retaining several swing districts in the US House from New York are their narrow majority hangs in the balance this November.

Voters’ awareness of an ongoing increase in crime could weigh down Democrats as well despite the relative popularity of new gun restrictions at the state level, according to the poll of 802 registered voters conducted June 7-9 and June 13.

“About two-thirds of New Yorkers think crime in their community is a serious problem, including 78% of New York City voters – 40% very serious – 61% of upstaters and 51% of downstate suburbanites,” pollster Steven Greenberg said in a press release.

There are also warning signs in the poll for Gov. Kathy Hochul as she runs for a full term in office in a year when Republicans are bullish of their chances of winning their first statewide election in two decades.

Voters have steadily gotten more pessimistic about the direction of the state since she became governor last August, with a majority of 51% saying things are going the wrong way compared to 37% last September.

The relative obscurity or outright unpopularity of Democratic and GOP rivals, however, could help her turn things around before voters hit the polls.

Majorities of voters said they are unfamiliar with her Democratic primary rivals Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Nassau) as well as GOP gubernatorial candidates Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Suffolk), former Westchester Executive Rob Astorino and businessman Harry Wilson.

The same is not true for GOP gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Giuliani, son of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, though voters have a sour mood on the younger Giuliani by a 19-point margin.

“Independents look a lot more like Republicans than Democrats when it comes to their views on Hochul, with 64% giving her a negative job rating, and 59% wanting someone else to vote for in November,” Greenberg said in the press release.
