#Yankees’ Luis Severino ‘didn’t feel right’ during warmups

CHICAGO — Luis Severino was scheduled to make what might have been his final rehab start Friday before potentially rejoining the Yankees rotation next week, but Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Doug Davis told reporters the right-hander said “he didn’t feel right” during warm-ups and didn’t take the mound for the RailRiders.

Davis also told reporters he didn’t know what the issue was with Severino, but it’s concerning news for a Yankees team in need of help in the rotation.

Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery threw bullpen sessions at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday and “all went well,’’ which means the two figure to be reinserted into the rotation early next week, Aaron Boone said on WFAN.

And Luis Gil likely will start one of the games of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Red Sox in The Bronx.

But the Yankees also have been counting on Severino to finally make his return, with Domingo German out with right shoulder inflammation. Clarke Schmidt is working his way back from an elbow strain and Michael King is still on the IL with a middle finger contusion while Corey Kluber just made his first rehab start on Thursday after being shelved since May with a strained shoulder.

Severino hasn’t pitched a meaningful game for the Yankees since the 2019 postseason and has tossed just 20 ¹/₃ innings since signing a four-year, $40 million extension. He’s been sidelined with rotator cuff inflammation, a lat strain, Tommy John surgery and — most recently — a groin strain.

And now a new issue could be added to the list.
