#Justin Fields ‘tired’ of Bears being ‘almost there’ after another loss

“Justin Fields ‘tired’ of Bears being ‘almost there’ after another loss”

After the Bears’ 12-7 loss to the Washington Commanders on Thursday night, Chicago quarterback Justin Fields let loose on his frustration over the team’s three-game losing streak after starting the season 2-1.

“We always get told that ‘we’re almost there, we’re almost there,’” Fields told reporters. “Me, personally, I’m tired of being almost there. I’m tired of being just this close. I feel like I’ve been hearing it for so long now. At the end of the day, all you can do is get back to work. That’s the only reaction you have. You live and you learn. Just get back next week and keep going, keep getting better.”

In a game that was close throughout, the Bears’ inability to cash in on red zone trips ultimately did them in. Chicago went 0-for-3 inside the 20-yard line, with drives ending on a Fields interception and two failed fourth-down conversions.

It’s the second time in three games the Bears failed to score in any of their red zone trips, also going 0-for-3 in their loss to the Giants in Week 4.

Fields noted the red zone issues are part of his frustration.

“When the play is there, make it,” he said. “Plain and simple. There is no logistics. It’s not complicated. It’s when you have that opportunity, finish. It’s that simple. We just didn’t do that tonight. You don’t have to make it harder than it is, pitch and catch.”

There is one red zone play that stuck with Fields after the game. On the Bears’ second red zone drive, set up by a Khalil Herbert 64-yard run, Fields overthrew tight end Ryan Griffin in the end zone on a second-and-3 from the Washington 3-yard line. Griffin had 4.05 yards of separation according to Next Gen stats.

“The one that’s making me mad is the one to Griff in the end zone,” Fields said. “He probably could have ran a little bit more, but he’s wide open. I got to hit that. I’m an NFL quarterback. I got to hit that.”

Fields finished 14-of-27 for 190 yards with one touchdown and one interception. According to ESPN Stats and Information, the Bears are the second team this season to gain more than 390 yards and score less than 10 points in a game.

Bears head coach Matt Eberfluss didn’t think Fields took a step back this week.

“I think he took a step forward,” Eberflus said. “I really do. Because, the toughness. For me, the ability to take the ball and drive it down at the very end to give us a chance to win it, that’s to me what was the improvement.”

Through six games the Bears have thrown only 115 passes, the fewest by any team through six games since the 1982 Patriots.

Fields was also under heavy pressure Thursday. According to ESPN Stats and Information, he was pressured 18 times, tied for the most in a game in his career. He’s been pressured on 46 percent of his dropbacks this season, the highest rate of pressure a quarterback has faced since the NFL began tracking QB pressures in 2009.

The Bears will have 10 days off before heading to New England to play the Patriots on “Monday Night Football.”
