French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo will reprint controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed cited by Islamic extremists in the 2015 terror attack on the newsroom.

The decision comes ahead of Wednesday’s trial in Paris for alleged accomplices in the massacre that left 12 editorial employees dead at the weekly publication’s office.

The magazine will run a staff editorial that argues reprinting the caricatures is necessary for the trial.

“The only reasons not to stem from political or journalistic cowardice,” the editorial said, CNN reported.

In a statement Tuesday, the publication said the cartoons were “part of history, and one cannot rewrite history, neither can it be erased.”

Seventeen people were killed in a wave of violence at Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in Paris.

The attackers, Chérif and Said Kouachi and Amedy Coulibaly, were killed by police.

Thirteen men and a woman will appear in court on Wednesday for allegedly providing the perpetrators with weapons and logistics.

The trial will be filmed, a rare occurrence in France reserved for proceedings of historical importance.
