#Snyder Cut Justice League Reshoots Reportedly Cost $70 Million

UPDATED 9/24/20 AT 7:00 PM ET Zack Snyder‘s Justice League is reversing earlier claims that the upcoming HBO Max mini-series would not include any newly shot footage. A report from the Hollywood Reporter reveals that Snyder’s project will be filming new footage, after all, and it sounds like the reshoot is turning out to be even more expensive than previously estimated.

According to The Wrap, production on Snyder’s new Justice League will cost about $70 million, bringing the budget to more than twice the original number. Instead of crafting the new cut with special effects, the cast of the original film will now return for a full week of additional filming with the director.

Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg will all star in the new Justice League, but Fisher’s appearance is especially noteworthy after his claims against Joss Whedon. The actor previously accused the Justice League film director of “gross, abusive” and “unprofessional” behavior on set of the original movie, but he’s now signed on to appear in Snyder’s cut and return to the Cyborg role.

In an interview with Collider today, Cavill told the outlet that he’s “not shooting anything additional” for the Snyder Cut. “It’s all stuff that has been already done,” he said. “Obviously I don’t know how things are going to evolve and change and adapt depending on now a different length of movie and whatever may happen in post-production. Whatever lessons may be learned from what is it four years since Justice League came out? Four years’ worth of fan reaction. For me…I’m now just watching the party.”

Back in May, former Head of HBO Max Bob Greenblatt hinted at the cost of Snyder’s Justice League, but he never mentioned a price tag as high as $70 million. During an appearance on the Recode Media podcast, Greenblatt called the Snyder Cut “complicated and wildly expensive” but declined to give specific figures. When host host Peter Kafka pressed the HBO Max boss, dropping the numbers $20 and $30 million, Greenblatt replied, “Yeah, I’ll just say I wish it was just $30 million. I’ll stop there, but it’s an enormous undertaking and very complex.”

The Snyder Cut of Justice League is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2021 as a four-episode limited series. The new project comes after years of campaigning by disappointed fans of Whedon’s Justice League film, which premiered in 2017 and was considered a flop by audiences and critics. Snyder, who had to step down from the original film due to a family tragedy, is coming back to recreate his vision with the new mini series.

When reached for comment about the new $70 million figure, an HBO rep declined to comment to Decider.
